Gary Valenciano has been an iconic figure for decades. The singer, actor and host has always been open about his health condition. At the recently concluded PROMIL ORGANIC online event, pediatrician Dr. Celeste Gomez opened the talk with a slide that reads, “Every time you eat a meal, you are either feeding a disease or fighting it.” That certainly got the attention of all attendees, including host Andi Manzano Reyes. So many topics were discussed like how does one know if a certain food is organic or not? What are the effects of commonly grown food on the body? Why should we consciously choose to buy and consume organic food and beverages?

Changing to an organic lifestyle may sound daunting, but essentially, vegetables and grains are considered organic if they have no GMO, synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, chemical additives or sewage sludge. Meat, poultry and fish must not contain any antibiotics, no hormones and fed with organic grains. Chicken must live in a free-range environment, cattle must be raised in an  open pasture and fish must be wild caught and not raised in pens. The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), a Germany based organization, is the body that gives the Certified Organic seal to products grown using agricultural standards.

Dr. Gomez says that conventionally grown food is till nutritious. The effect, however, of eating food that has antibiotics and is grown on soil treated with fertilizers and chemicals is that, over time, these components accumulate in our bodies and causes a myriad of sickness. So in order not to get to the point where are bodies have lowered immune response, or worse, won’t respond to medication when it is needed, now is the perfect time to go on a detox program. How? Our Favorites
You better have a good appetite as portions are hefty and good for sharing.  We liked the Providore Salad (P350) which has arugula, market greens, fresh avocado, bacon, walnuts, bleu cheese served with buttermilk ranch dressing. The Zuchinni Pecorino Fries (195) and  Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner (P350) which is  crispy fried chicken served with beans, sausage gravy on mashed potatoes and cheddar biscuit were both gone in minutes. I was very happy with my Salmon Grill Plate (595) which was accompanied with greek salad, mountain raice and dill lemon yogurt. The most sinful and delicious fare, however, was the Steel Plate Cooked Garlic Butter Salpicao Steak (P395). Quite a mouthful to say and even more so to eat! Imagine slices of tender US beef cooked in olive oil but swimming in butter. Delicious! It should be served with rice but is not so remember to ask for two cups when you order it.

We were all satisfied customers after our big meal. The staff was helpful and courteous and the meals were served fast and hot.  So if you’re looking to eat healthy, feed your big appetite or just to have coffee with some cookies, cakes or pastries, make Providore your next stop.  Happy eating!

Thanks to Facebook, I have our photos neatly chronicled in my online albums.  Each visit had it own set of highlights which in turn gave us uniquely wonderful memories. For first time travellers and  those who want to experience what it’s like to be in “the happiest place on earth,” here’s a  Disneyland capsule guide  that you may find useful.
When in Hong Kong 
Hong Kong Disneyland (311 acres) is the smallest of all the Disney parks.  If you start early, one day is enough  to enjoy all the rides as well as see all the attractions.  The first time we went there (which was eight years ago), we stayed at Disneyland Hotel.  My then 4 year old son had a blast finding all the hidden Mickeys in our room.  The downside was there were no nearby restaurants so we were forced to eat hotel and park food which was expensive and very limited.  By the time our 3 day trip was over ,  we couldn’t stand to look at  another Mickey shaped pancake!

Our second visit was more enjoyable.  We stayed in Novotel Hotel  Citygate which was right next to the premium shopping outlets. From there, it took us less than half an hour to get to the park via train. Remember to secure a map upon entering the gate. Take note of the time and place of the parade and the fireworks,  the shows you want to see and avail of the FAST PASS as this will save you the hassle of standing in long lines.  Must-try ride?  Feed your need for speed and ride The Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars at the Grizzly Gulch!

When in Japan
Tokyo Disney Resort houses two parks – Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea.   We spent the holidays in Japan last year. Hotel rates skyrocket during this season so book  early!  Check the weather as it gets very, very cold.  We had to contend with the freezing temperature AND rain.  Not a good combination at all! So pack heavy jackets and buy heat patches to keep you warm. Another problem is the language.  For a tourist destination, we were surprised that hardly any of the locals speak English.  It would be helpful to learn phrases that will help you order food,  ask for directions and for prices as well.   You may also feel left out in the mini-tours and interactive attractions —unless you understand Japanese.

The upside? Tokyo Disney Resort is hands down the cleanest among all the Disney parks.  The people are also very disciplined.  We saw  people patiently sitting down (for hours!) and braving the cold while waiting for a show to open.  “It’s a Small World”  (Disneyland) and “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (DisneySea)are the rides we enjoyed most as a family.

When in the USA
Disneyland Resort in California is our destination of choice(4 visits and counting!)   You will need at least 3 to 4 days to experience everything.  Buy Disney park-hopper tickets so you can shuttle back and forth Disneyland and  California Adventure.  Right outside the resort is Downtown Disney where you can eat, shop and listen to music.
My ultimate favorite place here is DISNEY ANIMATION–  (Holly woodland, California Adventure).  Here you can find the Sorcerer’s workshop where there’s a magical book that asks you questions about yourself and in the end reveals which Disney character you are, Animation Academy where different Disney film clips are simultaneously shown on gigantic screens and Turtle Talk With Crush (a 20-minute interactive show where the audience get to talk with the turtle from  FINDING NEMO.

The biggest Disney park Walt Disney World (Orlando) deserves its own review.  With Magic Kingdom, Epcot Center, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios – there are a gazillion things to do there!
So where are we headed this time?  Well, there’s only one Disney park we have yet to visit.   Audrey Hepburn couldn’t be wrong when she said, “ Paris is always a good idea!” Au Revoir!

NO FUSS ORDERING
I’m certainly living up to my name “BQP” – make that a bold “B”  for BUSY!  So when the hubby told me that he  had  VIP guests coming over for dinner last weekend,  I felt a bit anxious. I had two interviews that day which left me no time at all to cook! It was the perfect time to call 212-1212.

The Call
I wanted to order from PF Chang’s.  It’s one of our go-to restos when abroad . We are also frequent diners since  it opened in Manila.   I’ve seen the  212-1212 sign in their doors at Alabang Town Center so I know that they deliver in our area.  I placed the call, the Agent asked for my information/address and I gave my order.  “I can’t make up my mind, “ I said. “Miss, ano ba mas ok? (Which ones tastes better?) The Mongolian Beef or the Northern Spare Ribs? “  “Wait lang po, Ma’am, I will call the  restaurant and get back to you.”   She promptly gave me feedback after a few minutes . “Ma’am PF Chang recommends the Mongolian Beef.  The sauce is a perfect blend of sweet and salty. “

Text and Callback
I felt like cooking my famous spaghetti recipe on a rainy Monday and thought it would best be paired with Chicken Fingers from Friday’s.   This time I ordered via texting. I texted the word “ORDER” to 0918 -2121212.   In less than five minutes,  “Ola” the agent called me.  “I would like two orders of chicken fingers—don’t put pepper on the fries please.” “Ma’am would you like to add salad or drinks to your order?”  “Yes to the salad please!  One small order of the Friday’s Caesar salad.  Can you  have it delivered by 6:30?” I ended the  call by asking Ola to have change ready for my payment.
