Godzilla vs Kong A New Empire is now the number one movie in the world! The movie depicts the epic battle between two legendary cinematic behemoths known to us all – Godzilla  and Kong. Director Adam Wingard keeps the audience glued to the edge of their seats as he brings us to an all new adventure that pits the two against an undiscovered threat hidden in the depths of this world — one which threatens our very existence.

Kong Rules!

The cast includes Rebecca Hall, Bran Henry, Kaylee Hottle and Fala Chen who all make the story more endearing but nonetheless most exciting. The Titan team up against new monsters is something that will make moviegoers want to watch it again and again. I like that the director makes use of the colors pink and blue. Godzilla unleashes a lethal dose of pink energy as his ultimate weapon while the antagonist monsters are bathed in blue.

At the heart of the movie though is a good story that allows for believable acting, good cinematography and credible direction. Wingard is an effective storyteller and successfully brings to the screen the awesomeness of the titans as well as unabashed absurdity. Watching the movie on Imax most definitely elevates the experience. The close ups of these larger than life creatures is something to behold!

Get Ready for epic fights in Godzilla vs Kong – A New Empire

I also like that there are two concurrent stories. A deaf child in search of her roots and Kong who is in search of his own kind. These two missions conclude in an ending that brings both to new (or renewed) beginnings.

Loaded with big lizard and big monkey wrestling moves, new scary monsters, and epic battle sequences, Godzilla vs Kong  A New Empire is not to be missed! See it now in theaters near you!

Founded in 1926 by the Asociacion Musical de Filipinas with Alexander Lippay as its first conductor, the MSO has risen from its early challenges to become a symbol of resilience. Surviving the initial threats to its existence in the 1920s, the second world war in the 1940s, the political upheavals of the 1970s and 1980s, the closure of the Metropolitan Theater in the 1990s, and the global pandemic of the recent past, the MSO has not just endured but thrived. From showcasing resistance during World War II to hosting renowned artists and conductors, the MSO has woven itself into the very fiber of Filipino culture. Today, it stands as both Asia’s oldest orchestra and the Philippines’ longest-surviving artistic institution.

The Road to 100 – The Manila Symphony Orchestra will have a tour at select cities in the country.

Now, the MSO embarks on its momentous “Road to 100,” a journey few institutions can claim. Its unwavering commitment to musical excellence and education shines through not just in initiatives like the Gala Concert Series, Rush Hour Concerts, and provincial tours, but also in the development of a new generation of Filipino talents by way of the MSO Foundation, the MSO Music Academy, and the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra.

“We carry the torch with joy, pride, and dedication,” shares Maestro Marlon Chen, MSO’s musical director. “This isn’t just a celebration of longevity; it’s a commitment to a legacy that belongs to every Filipino—a Symphony for the People.”

The Road to 100 is more than a countdown; it’s a blueprint for the MSO’s future prosperity. Concerts leading up to the centennial aim to reflect its purpose—uniting people through music across time and generations.

In its inaugural year, 2024, the MSO commences the Road to 100 by paying homage to the timeless compositions of Giacomo Puccini in the first concert of the new season. Puccini, a composer whose works continue to stir emotions even a century after his death, becomes a testament that music is not just a bridge of time but also a unifying force across cultures.

As early as April this year, we will see the MSO embark on a nationwide tour, which will continue through 2025. From the hills of Batanes to the lush landscapes of Mindanao, the MSO’s mission is to breathe life into its thrust—a Symphony for the People. With patron cities like Cebu and Iloilo already on board, the MSO extends an invitation to more cities and provinces to join this historic musical journey.

The pinnacle arrives in 2026, the centennial year, filled with culminating concerts, projects, and the launch of the MSO’s commemorative book—a testament to its exceptional journey, having played with the world’s best and earning global recognition. From esteemed guest conductors to its own musicians performing in prestigious halls worldwide, the book documents the MSO’s remarkable history and impact.

Looking ahead, the MSO’s commitment to artistic excellence and community support remains steadfast. The MSO Foundation, which actively seeks backing for financial stability and a suitable venue for its diverse activities, the MSO Music Academy (currently serving over 300 students in three training centers), and the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra all play vital roles in shaping the landscape of classical music in the Philippines. They champion young talent through programs like the Basilio Manalo College Scholarships and international music scholarships. Furthermore, they actively collaborate with local governments to establish orchestras in public schools, ensuring that the influence of classical music extends well beyond the confines of traditional concert halls.

What lies ahead for a centenarian? How can it grow concert audiences in an era where people live and think in the moment? Anticipating how the MSO will tackle these challenges is something to look forward to as it continues to produce world-class annual concert series involving top-tier soloists and guests conductors, and to promote Filipino music and compositions not just locally, but on the world stage, as well.

“The inherent power of orchestral music ensures its endurance and relevance as an art form. However, our aim is not merely to secure its survival but to foster an existence that thrives well into the future. Music’s enduring role as a cultural bridge transcends diverse backgrounds and geographic boundaries, offering a glimmer of hope even in the bleakest of time,” adds Marianne Hontiveros, president of MSO Foundation, Inc.

The Manila Symphony Orchestra’s Road to 100 is more than a journey through time; it’s a Symphony for the People—a celebration of music, culture, and the unrelenting spirit of the Filipino. This isn’t just the MSO’s legacy; it’s ours to share, nurture, and keep alive for generations to come. Join us on this historic adventure—become an advocate, spread the word, introduce young minds to the power of music, and support initiatives that ensure the MSO’s symphony resonates and prosper in the next 100 years.

Manila Symphony Orchestra and its Rich Heritage

The Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is one of the oldest orchestras in Asia and the longest surviving artistic institution in the Philippines. Founded by Alexander Lippay in 1926, the orchestra played a major role in Philippine history, including acting as a symbol of resistance during the Second World War. Through the years, MSO has hosted artists such as Montserrat Caballé, Yehudi Menuhin, Igor Oistrakh, Eugene Istomin, Fou Ts’ong, Barry Tuckwell, Paul Badura-Skoda and Rony Rogoff, as well as conductors Andre Kostelanetz, Arthur Fiedler, Mendi Rodan, Robert Feist, Gareth Nair, Helen Quach, and Eduard Strauss II. Among those who have performed with the orchestra are several National Artists of the Philippines such Antonio Molina, Antonino Buenaventura, Lucio San Pedro, Ernani Cuenco Levi Celerio, and Ryan Cayabyab.

Today, the Manila Symphony Orchestra is one of the country’s most active artistic institution, providing a variety of high-quality performances and actively supporting the development of young Filipino talents. Currently, the MSO’s artistic team is led by Marlon Chen as Music Director, Jeffrey Solares as Associate Conductor, and Diomedes Saraza Jr. as Concertmaster.

Ready or not , here comes Poor Things —a quirky, comical and dark (made light by the genius script) film starring Emma Stone. Of late, it has won the Golden Globe Awards for Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture and Best Performance for a Female lead in a Musical or Comedy. In addition, the movie also got an Oscar nod for (again)  Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo for Best Supporting Actor and Tony McNamara (for Best Adapted Screenplay). These accolades and nominations aside, the question is — Are Filipinos ready for a film like this?

Emma Stone is a revelation in the truest sense of the word in Poor Things.

We will know in the coming days as it opens on Valentines Day. Fittingly so, as the movie delves into different kinds of love. Cruel (A father experimenting on his own son for scientific advancement), distorted (A god caring for his mother-child creation), innocent (a being caring for her creator in return), deceitful, passionate, physical and so on. You will, for sure, be won over by the acting of Emma Stone. How her character yearns for freedom, goodness, and individuality but is forced to deal with realities in her own terms is something we can all learn from.

Set in Victorian Glasgow, Willem Dafoe (Dr. Baxter) brings back to life a suicide victim (eventually Bella) in a most bizarre way. She quickly learns the ways of the world and goes on an exploration of self, humanity, and the world. Along the way she (the creature) exhibits a more profound understanding of life than the supposed educated (including street educated) beings she is surrounded by.

As a parent, I have to say that this must be watched strictly by responsible adults. The screen adaptation is exceptional but the editing needs improvement. The shock value of intimate scenes is delivered once too many and waters it down. Messages are crystal clear and apt for the times so long-drawn sexual exploits were unnecessary. If you appreciate dark humor then you will relish every salacious moment of the movie.

The other thing that caught my eye all throughout the movie was Stone’s spunky modern Victorian wardrobe. Outfit after outfit was soooo on point! I would love to have 3 numbers, at least, in my own closet. Costume Design? Tens across the board! (udpate: Poort Things just won Best costume Design at the BAFTAS!)

Catch Poor things in theatres now!

Comic legend Gene Wilder  was the first to breathe life to Willy Wonka (which permanently etched the film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in my childhood memory). Then Johhny Depp gave the role his signature eccentric portrayal. Now heartthrob (of Dune fame) Timothee Chalamet gives it a go — and his performance was just lit!

Wonka captures Shorty aka “orange man.”

From Paul King , writer/director of “Paddington” and  Luke Kelly , the producer of  “Matilda the Musical“, comes an intoxicating mix of magic, music and mayhem all told with a big heart. Based on the iconic character created by Roald Dahl in his children’s storybook  Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this prequel puts on screen the wondrous narrative of how a chocolate maker manages to bring joy and positivity to everyone he meets AND how his chocolates changes them for the good, one delectable bite at a time.

Chalamet’s performance is filled wit innocence, purity, and youth. His opening song on board a boat bodes of good things to come (and they do!) but he is confronted by a myriad of problems the minute he reaches land. From a greedy city, corrupt policemen, a trio of scheming chocolate company owners to scrupulous innkeepers, and their cohorts –Wonka faces them all without losing sight of his dreams. And always, always, holding on to his mother’s promise that she will be with him whenever he is able to share the joy of sharing the best chocolates to the people.

Stellar performances are also given by the supporting cast. Hugh Grant is hysterical as the orange man and his lackadaisical humor is addictive. Viewers are left wanting for more oompa loompa action every time “Shorty” goes on screen. Olivia Colman (as the conniving innkeeper) and Tom Davis (her henchman) are hateful as the dastardly duo who has made a living from taking advantage of the needy. Perfect villains indeed! The chief of police, played by Keegan Michael Key,  provides laughs here and there as his fondness for chocolate becomes larger and larger. The same goes for Rowan Atkinson as the wayward priest. Along with 500 singing and chocolate loving monks, the misadventures soon become sticky and aplenty.

Wonka’s Chocolates are the best in the world!

The magic chocolates also deliver their fair share of awesome. Imagine being able to fly, grow multicolored hair, and remember old flames –with just a bite can make you do all those!

Wonka is a highly enjoyable movie that the whole family will relish! In the end, it’s essentially a movie about HOPE and its power to change the world.

Catch it on cinemas December 6!

The Christmas Season is upon us and people are eager to get their shopping started. Leading mall destination Shangri-la Mall meets this anticipation with a selection of top retailers with offers for every discerning demand.

For a Southie and fashion enthusiast like me, the travel to Shangri-La is worth the trip. My list is two pages long and it’s certainly good to get an early start. I went on a Tuesday and love that the mall is not too crowded. My favorite stores like  Massimo Dutti,  Stradivarius and Zara never fail to yield good finds. The luxury stores on the newer wing (Gucci, Saint Laurent, etc) are also a big draw for mall goers. But, there’s more!

I was pleasantly surprised to see a big United Colors of  Benetton at the mid-level 2/3 East wing. Of course, I had to check it out. This brand was all the rage back in the day (80’s and 90’s) with its multicolored tees that had a small logo on the left hand side. This time, garments and purses sported a happy fruit theme.  Very noticeable are other vibrant designs such as  the dot looks for women and playful optical patterns for men. The store itself had a very fun vibe with  luscious red cherry decor strewn across the floor. I love the pastel bags, sweaters, and shirts. There’s also a kid section so I immediately thought of getting a twinning outfit for my daughter and myself. Can’t wait to bring her to the store!

United Colors of Benetton is BACK! Check out the brands eye-catching designs at very affordable prices, too!

Then there’s the Puma shop. Showcasing its Forever Faster spirit and athleisure flair, I was told by the salesperson that only Shang Mall carries the Fenty x Puma capsule. This latest collaboration, with Rihanna as Fenty’s Creative Director, blends Puma’s sports heritage with the singer’s music, culture, and forward fashion style. The metallic Fenty x Puma Avanti features the king football boot worn by the greats (Eusebio, Maradona and Pelé) with fresh details like the Fenty logo, a fold-over tongue, gum outsole and a leather footbed. “Size seven please!”  Better hurry as the store only carries a very limited number of these sole beauties.

Gotta get a pair or two of these Fenty x Puma collab shoes, exclusively sold at the Puma store in Shangri-la Mall.

Next, I headed to the Lego store to check out the latest in the colorful brick toydom. All Lego fans will appreciate the newest feature in the store where they get to see the final outcome (fully built Lego design) witout opening the box. The personnel showed me a sample of an Optimus Prime box. He scanned the box and I was able to see the completed truck and robot on screen. Wow! Check out collections from BTS Dynamite, Marvel, Harry Potter, and more. There’s also a mini-figure station where you can build your own designs. It’s the perfect place to leave the kids and keep them busy while you check out the merchandise.

Lego toys are always good gift ideas.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Muji store! Bedsheets, containers of all kinds, plastic cabinets, notebooks, refillable pens– it’s a one stop shop for everything you need. Plus, there’s a coffee shop in front so you may want to get your caffeine fix before continuing on.

Muji has everything you need.

I’m attending  a wedding in a few weeks so I dropped by Francis Libiran’s atelier. Beautifully beaded gowns  and men’s suits were on display. Gowns start a t P80,000 depending on the intricacy of the design. Headpieces, belts, and different accessories can also be seen throughout the store.

Francis Libiran’s atelier

Any mall visit will not be complete without a stop at the bookstore.  School has also just started last month so I bought art materials, a copy of Vogue, and an Agatha Christie book from National Bookstore.

All in all , it was a very exciting retail therapy for this queen. I’m sure you’ll have as much fun as I did.  So do visit  Shangri-la Mall and experience unparalleled shopping and dining…. My food crawl in the mall is coming up next!

With a pocketful of glitter,

Agatha Christie fans unite! I’m sure you’ve seen the trailers and some reviews of the mystery thriller A Haunting in Venice. Having read (devoured) Ms. Christie’s work as a child, I was more than excited to see this latest film from Kenneth Branagh and 20th Century Studios. Although it’s loosely based on the book Hallowe’en Party, the third installment is as deliciously captivating as the written work itself.

WHODUNNIT?!!!
Watch A Haunting in Venice. Now showing in cinemas!

Set in a haunted palazzo in old Venice, the story begins with a Halloween Party where orphans are dressed up to celebrate the day of the dead. Earlier that same day, retired detective Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) is invited to a seance by his mystery writer friend Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey). He is skeptical (of course!) but agrees to go anyway to expose the renowned mystic Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh) for the farce he is most certain she is. The order of the night — Reynolds will call on the spirit of the departed daughter of the palazzo’s owner. However, all hell breaks loose when the possessed Reynolds starts identifying the murderer . A second death soon follows after…. and a third.

Moviegoers are kept at the edge of their seats as the story unravels and each character is questioned by Poirot. A raging storm keeps them all trapped in the mansion as the detective vows to name the killer before sunrise. The story builds up until the final reveal is made —Whodunnit?

This movie has all the elements of a good mystery. Gather characters that all have motives, add haunting scenarios (even the palazzo feels like a character), and have twists and turns that will confuse the spectators. Kenneth Branagh, as actor and director, succeeds in coming up with a film that does justice to Christie’s masterpieces. With powerful performances by its cast which includes Kyle Allen, Jamie Dornan, Jude Hill, Ali Khan, Emma Laird and more, this is a must-watch movie that will bring chills and thrills to the entire family.

Looking forward to more Agatha Christie adaptation in the future. Bravo!

The wait is over! Fans of the Black Panther franchise will not be disappointed after watching the 2 and a half hour sequel. The first scenes show a frantic Shuri (Letitia Wright) trying desperately to save her brother King T’Challa from a mysterious disease. The Queen Mother (played by the audacious Angela Basset) enters the lab and tells her daughter that the king has joined his ancestors. A festive wake follows but younger sister Shuri is finding it hard to accept her brother’s untimely demise.

A new Black Panther rises!

The story progresses and the audience is introduced to a new villain called Namor (child without love played convincingly by Tenoch Huerta Mejia) who is also the king of the seas. His supermutant powers rival the best of the Marvel heroes and soon Wakanda finds itself in a serious bind. Thinking that vibranium can only be found within the kingdom of Wakanda, a new invention by a black American college student proves otherwise. A war is imminent unless Namor’s war plans against the land dwellers are thwarted.

Together with allies old and new – War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) –will the Wakandans be able to fight for the survival of their people?

The script is laudable as it honors the memory of the late great Chad Boseman — the only true Black Panther in my book. The actions scenes are made more outstanding by fantastic CGI. And the villain is someone that someone that brings a frenzied excitement to the story.

Essentially, Black Panther 2 is a story about love: sibling love, mother’s love, love of country and after much strife, hope.

Directed by Ryan Coogler and  produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore. Catch the movie now in cinemas near you!
